That is how long a club-face meets the ball according to this USGA “Science of Golf” video that examines friction and spin. Some very cool extremely slow-mo and super zoomed shots of a wedge hitting the ball – you can see the water spurting out of the grooves.
One of the things you learn in this “Fore The Golfer” video from the USGA. They do note that a golfer from above the hole should always be able to stop it near the hole. Doesn’t have to be easy to do but it should be possible. That guideline is violated by a lot of courses.
The USGA has another video series – “Fore the Golfer” – that explores how course care issues affect golfers. This first one looks at the technicalities of changing hole locations on a green.
The fourth episode focuses on practical tips for players, including tee selection, shot preparation and course management.
This one focuses on how players can improve pace of play around the greens.
